Sarah Winchester

Architecture has attracted some spectacular eccentrics. Sarah Winchester, widow of the American arms manufacturer Oliver Winchester, believed the ghosts of people killed by her husband’s rifles would haunt her unless she built a magnificent house large enough to accommodate a legion of friendly ghosts to protect her. Over the next 38 years, the mansion in San Jose California grew to eight stories tall with 158 rooms; a bizarre place filled with snares intended to thwart malicious spirits.
